According
to medical entomologist Stephen Doggett of the Institute for Clinical
Pathology & Medical Research (ICPMR), based at Westmead Hospital,
Australia is in the grip of a bed bug pandemic with the Australian
accommodation and tourism industry losing an estimated $100 million
annually from bed bug infestations.
Stephen Doggett says the bed bug epidemic is horrifying and costly
for all levels of the accommodation industry, from backpacker hostels
to five-star hotels. (information taken from
the University of Sydney. Feb 2nd 2006)
To aid
in the eradication of these pests Stephen Doggett has prepared a
Code of Practice (CoP) for the Control of Bed Bug Infestations in
Australia. In the Code of Practice he recommends mattress encasing
a great way to control and prevent bed bugs from infesting a mattress
and names Protect-A-Bed as a supplier.
“The
following have undergone laboratory testing, and if used to manufacturers
instructions, bed bugs are unable to escape from the encasements.
They also incorporate a membrane which is impervious to the bite
of the bed bug” Protect-A-Bed Encasements - Colkap Products.
